Your passport or ID card is one of the most important things you carry on your trip. Here's how to keep it safe, and what to do if it's lost or stolen.
Before you leave
- Make a copy. Scan or photograph your passport or ID card and save it somewhere secure that you can reach online, for example a protected cloud folder. A copy makes it much easier to get help if you lose the original.
- Leave a copy with someone you trust, such as your parents, who can help you quickly if something goes wrong.
During your trip
- Always carry your original passport or ID card. Train staff may ask to see it during ticket inspection, and you need it for border checks. A copy is only a backup, not a replacement.
- Keep it out of sight, in a zipped pocket or bag that's hard for others to reach.
What if my passport or ID card is lost or stolen?
- Report it to the local police and ask for a written report. You'll usually need it to apply for a new document.
- Contact your country's embassy or consulate. They can give you an emergency travel document. Find an embassy or consulate
- Check where you can travel with it. An emergency travel document may only be valid for your journey home. Each country decides whether you can enter or leave it without a valid passport or ID card, so ask the embassy before you continue your trip.
Outside the EU, if your country doesn't have an embassy or consulate there, you can ask any other EU country's embassy or consulate for an EU Emergency Travel Document. More about consular protection for EU citizens
Got a new passport or ID card?
Your Pass is linked to the last 3 digits of the document number you entered when you activated it. If your document changes:
- Your 1-month travel period hasn't started yet: deactivate your Pass, then activate it again straight away. When you activate it, enter the last 3 digits of your new document.
- Your travel period has already started (for example, if you lose your passport during your trip and get an emergency travel document): contact the DiscoverEU Travel Team, and we'll help you update it.
