In most countries you'll visit, yes. Thanks to the EU's "Roam like at home" rules, you can use your phone in other EU countries at the same price as at home. Your calls, texts and mobile data come out of your normal plan, with no extra roaming charges.
Where does "Roam like at home" apply?
- In all EU countries, and also in Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
- These rules apply until at least 2032.
- They're for travelling, not living abroad: as long as you use your phone more at home than abroad, you're covered. A 1-month DiscoverEU trip is fine.
Where can I be charged extra?
"Roam like at home" doesn't apply outside the EU and those three countries. This includes countries where your Pass is valid, such as Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Türkiye, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. Some mobile operators include these countries in their plans, but many don't, and using mobile data there can be very expensive.
Tips to avoid surprises
- Check your plan before you go. Ask your mobile operator which countries are included and what the prices are elsewhere.
- Outside the EU, turn off mobile data if it isn't included in your plan, and use free wifi instead. You can also buy a local SIM card or an eSIM.
- On ferries and near borders, your phone may connect to a network outside the EU without you noticing. Keep an eye on your network, or turn off data roaming until you're back on land.
Remember: you need to go online at least once every 24 hours to keep your DiscoverEU Interrail Pass active. Do I need an internet connection?
