A Travel Day covers one full calendar day, from 00:00 to 23:59 (local time). On each Travel Day, you can use the train networks included in your DiscoverEU Interrail Pass. Your Interrail Pass includes 7 Travel Days, which you can use during your 1-month validity period.
Important things to know
Inbound & outbound travel: You can only use 2 of your total travel days to take trains in (or through) your home country. These are called Inbound/Outbound journeys. When you plan a train journey in your home country, you'll be asked to activate an Inbound or Outbound journey in addition to your regular Travel Day.
Night trains & travel days: Taking a night train can help you save Travel Days. In most cases, you only need 1 Travel Day - the day your train departs.
However, you'll need a second Travel Day if:
- You change trains after midnight.
- Your journey home might also require an additional Travel Day.

Getting the Most out of your Travel Days
You only have 7 Travel Days, so it's worth planning ahead.
Travel Days are usually best used for longer journeys or days when you'll be taking multiple trains. You don't have to travel directly from destination to destination using your Pass, so you can cover shorter distances with other transport options.
For shorter trips, it may be cheaper to buy a separate train or bus ticket and save your Travel Day for later. You can also find discounts through the EYCA and Interrail offers available in the Benefits Portal. EYCA discounts can be found in the DiscoverEU Travel App under More.
Night trains are another great way to make the most of your Pass, as direct night trains usually only require the departure day to be counted as a Travel Day.
Planning your Travel Days
In many cases, travelling between two European cities only uses 1 Travel Day. For example:
- Berlin → Paris = 1 Travel Day
- Paris → Barcelona = 1 Travel Day
You can start and end your trip in any participating European country, and you don't need to begin and finish at the same station. Your Interrail Global Pass also includes 2 journeys in your country of residence:
- One to leave your country.
- One to return home.

Remember: it is your responsibility to make sure your planned trip fits within your Pass validity period and available Travel Days. Any additional travel costs are not reimbursed by the DiscoverEU Programme.
Flight tickets are not included in your Travel Days
Additional flight tickets provided to travellers from island countries, or to travellers visiting island countries, do not count towards your 7 Travel Days. However, these flights must still take place within the 1-month validity period of your DiscoverEU travel.
