We hope your trip goes smoothly, but delays, cancellations and strikes can happen. Here's what to do if your plans are affected.
In every situation: talk to the train staff as soon as possible, and keep proof of what happened, for example a photo of the departure board or a written delay statement from the train company.
A delay made me miss my connection
- If you're still on the train, ask the conductor for a written delay statement.
- When you arrive, go to the ticket office. Staff can often rebook you on the next train to your destination, including any new seat reservation you need.
- You can also look for other connections in the Planner.
If you can't reach your final destination, ask the train staff for help. Train companies may not have to arrange your whole onward journey, because of how passenger rights work for the Pass, but many will still try to help. How passenger rights work for DiscoverEU travellers
My train was cancelled
Already on your way? Follow the steps under "A delay made me miss my connection".
Haven't started your journey yet? You can take the next train or travel on another day.
- If the next train needs a seat reservation, ask staff at the ticket office to rebook it.
- To travel on another day, cancel your Travel Day before it starts. How to cancel a Travel Day
- If your Travel Day has already started, contact the DiscoverEU Travel Team. Include screenshots of My Trip and My Pass, and proof of the cancellation.
There's a strike
If you've turned on notifications under More > Settings, we'll send you a push notification when we hear about a major strike. Check the train company's website to see if your journey is affected, so you can change your plans in time. How to check for disruptions

- Your Travel Day has already started and you can't travel: contact the DiscoverEU Travel Team and include a screenshot of My Trip.
Please note: DiscoverEU delay compensation generally doesn't cover disruptions caused by strikes, so you may have to pay any extra costs yourself. If you have travel insurance, you may be able to claim them from your insurer.
